Bell Tower
A temple bell and a bell tower to support it are traditional elements of a Zen Buddhist temple.
When someone strikes the bell—at dawn, mid-day or dusk—he or she bows three times, offering their deepest intentions that all those who hear the sound of the bell will be awakened and be freed from all suffering.
Green Gulch Farm’s bell, called a bonsho, or obonsho (great sacred bell), was crafted in Japan and brought to America in 1975. For years, it has hung from the massive branch of a very large tree near the meditation hall.
Green Gulch has always intended to create a beautiful, traditional tower for the bonsho bell, yet there were always pressing priorities in the community. In 2012, when Hoistsu Suzuki Roshi (the son of Zen Center’s founder) visited Green Gulch, he expressed sadness for the bell’s place in our community, reminded us of the importance of the bell, and re-inspired us to create a real and enduring home for it.
The new bell tower will be located on the front lawn across from the zendo – the lawn is being refurbished after the construction of Still Water Hall and the renovation of Cloud Hall. There is a beautiful design planned for the tower.

The cost of the new bell tower is approximately $147,000. The community has raised $121,220 toward this goal, leaving $25,780 still to be raised* (figures updated on 12/18/15). Construction and installation of the bell tower will begin this year, 2015.
*Due to a discrepancy in our systems, we adjusted the amounts raised and left to raise for the project on 8/21/15.

Hike and meditate at Green Gulch Zen Center in Marin County
Feel like you need to enlighten up? Green Gulch Zen Center understands. For over 40 years, this Marin County staple of mindfulness has blazed a trail to ahhs (including, literally, a fabulous hiking trail!). For those curious, visit the Center on a Sunday morning, when they open their wooden temple doors to the public for meditation classes. Remove your shoes at the door and take a seat on a wooden platform cushioned by pillows. Next, assume the position: legs crossed, arms resting on knees, back straight, eyes half-open gazing ahead.
