The minimum requirement for PsychoPy is a computer with a graphics card that supports OpenGL. Many newer graphics cards will work well. Ideally the graphics card should support OpenGL version 2.0 or higher. Certain visual functions run much faster if OpenGL 2.0 is available, and some require it (e.g. ElementArrayStim).

To meet these goals PsychoPy provides a choice of interface - you can use a simple graphical user interface called Builder, or write your experiments in Python code. The entire application and library are written in Python and is platform independent. There is a range of documentation at. PsychoPy is the only package with reaction time precision under 4 ms online! Update your stimulus on every frame, just like in the desktop! Upload that to Pavlovia.org (with easy tools built into the PsychoPy app) Give participants your URL and run your study in the browser! PsychoPy is an experiment development program and Python library. It is free and open source software with a community contributing to its development and maintenance. The experiments are written in Python, which is a popular general-purpose programming language with a great deal of information. PsychoPy is an open-source (free) software package for creating rich, dynamic experiments in psychology, neuroscience and linguistics. It provides an intuitive graphical interface (the 'Builder') as well as the option to insert Python code.

If you already have a computer, you can install PsychoPy and the Configuration Wizard will auto-detect the card and drivers, and provide more information. It is inexpensive to upgrade most desktop computers to an adequate graphics card. High-end graphics cards can be very expensive but are only needed for vision research (and high-end gaming).

If you’re thinking of buying a laptop for running experiments, avoid the built-in Intel graphics chips (e.g. GMA 950). The drivers are crummy and performance is poor; graphics cards on laptops are more difficult to exchange. Get something with nVidia or ATI chips instead. Some graphics cards that are known to work with PsychoPy can be found here; that list is not exhaustive, many cards will also work.
